Alva Burl Wood Table Lamp

Burl is the part of the tree that grew wrong — a knotted swell in the trunk that a woodworker sets aside and a furniture maker pays for. Cut into veneer, it gives you figure no straight-grained board can: swirls, dark eyes, a depth that shifts as you move past it.

Alva puts that surface on two simple shapes. A hexagonal column, a wide faceted shade — 45 cm across, wider than the lamp is tall — so the wood does the talking and the geometry stays quiet. Lit, it throws a low warm pool downward and leaves the room above it soft.

It suits a console in a hallway, a sideboard behind a sofa, or a bedside table where you want light to read by and nothing brighter.

Wood Grain Characteristics
Burl is cut from the irregular growth of the tree, so no two panels are ever alike. Colour, figure and the dark eye knots vary from piece to piece — this variation is a property of the material, not a fault, and it is what makes each lamp its own object. The Light Burl finish is a pale, creamy blonde with honey figure; the Dark Burl finish is a deep walnut brown.
